Symptoms of OSFED

The symptoms of OSFED that will be exhibited by a patient will depend on the unique nature of the Other Specified Feeding or Eating Disorder the individual is experiencing. For example, a patient may exhibit the following, or some of the following behavioural symptoms:

  • Distorted body image
  • Strange rituals associated with food and/or eating
  • Binge eating
  • Purging by laxative abuse, diuretic abuse, self-induced vomiting, or compulsive exercise
  • Manipulation of insulin for weight loss
  • Restricting calories and/or self-starvation
  • Obsessive exercise behaviour
  • Obsession with food cleanliness or purity
  • Intense shame or anxiety related to food, eating or body image
  • Loss-of-control eating behaviours. For example eating past satiety, impulsive eating, night eating/nocturnal eating
  • Compulsive food behaviours such as obtaining and eating food out of the garbage, or hiding food

Physical symptoms, such as the following, may also manifest:

  • Fatigue
  • Muscle cramps
  • Dry skin
  • Bloating
  • Menstrual irregularities (among women)
  • Dehydration

If you or a loved one are exhibiting any of the above symptoms, please contact us for a proper evaluation to determine if there is an eating disorder present or not.

Treatment

There is no all cure or one-size-fits-all approach to treating OFSED. The most ideal approach for treating such eating disorders will depend on the particular OFSED as well as the individual needs of the patient. To make sure you receive the best possible treatment, we will first carefully assess your condition and use the results of the assessment to tailor a treatment plan that best suits your needs.

Generally, OSFED treatment in our facility consists of:

  • one-on-one therapy sessions
  • medication
  • expressive and experiential therapy
  • group sessions that aid behaviour modification and emotion management
  • family therapy
  • twelve-step facilitation and meetings
  • nutrition counselling
  • weekly psychiatric consultation
  • trauma awareness and recovery groups
  • psychotherapy

By following a holistic approach that incorporates proven OSFED treatment methodology, we are able to achieve the following:

  • Address distorted thinking
  • Restore you to a healthy body weight
  • Treat emotional problems such as low self-esteem
  • Help you make behavioural changes that will help you achieve lasting recovery

Talking Therapies

Talking therapies can be very helpful in the treatment of OSFED. Talking therapies are named this because of the key role communication plays in their efficiency. We use the following talking therapies to assist our patients with recovering from their eating disorder:

  • Cognitive analytic therapy (CAT)

CAT is a type of psychological therapy and collaborative programme. By using it, we are able to understand your perception of food and how your thoughts influence your feelings and actions concerning eating. The therapy also looks into your past experiences which may have contributed to your OSFED.

  • Cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT)

CBT uses communication to understand the root cause of your disorder and develop a personalised treatment plan to take care of it. CBT can go on for 40 weeks or less in the form of weekly sessions. By going through CBT, you will learn to make healthy food choices, cope with your feelings, and understand nutrition and the effects of your unhealthy eating behaviours.

  • Focal psychodynamic therapy (FPT)

FPT will assess your eating habits and how they are related to your thought process and how you feel about others in your life as well as yourself. The therapy can come in the form of weekly sessions that go on for up to 40 weeks

  • Interpersonal psychotherapy (IPT)

IPT is attachment-focused psychotherapy that focuses on symptomatic recovery as well as the resolution of interpersonal problems. It is highly structured and works within a time limit (usually 12–16 weeks) to aid recovery. It helps by looking into relationships and past life events that may impact your perception of food, body image, and mood.

Nutrition and Diet Management

Your nutrition and diet is key to a comprehensive recovery from OSFED. By carefully managing your nutrition and diet through a personalised programme that stabilises your weight and provides you optimal nutrition, our clinical team can put you on the best path to recovery. The nutrition and diet programme will be altered as necessary as your condition improves.

Family Support

Family support will require you and your family to engage in sessions with a therapist to explore your eating disorder and how it affects you and your family. It will also teach your family how to support you through the trying period of recovery all the way to good health.

During family support sessions, we will also educate you on how to manage feelings or circumstances that may cause you to relapse into unhealthy eating habits. Sessions can be held with your family and you present, or as a group with other families.
